I’m not sure how we got to this point.  Our first born, forever my baby girl, is graduating from college in less than two months.  Insert a ginormous sigh here, along with mutterings of “it was just yesterday…” trailing off as I get lost in a wave of memories.  Time has no pity on a mother’s heart.

Since my darling daughter has a hearty dislike of having her portrait taken, I thought it best to let Rachel take charge of organizing her shoot.  We recently met up in Seattle on a Sunday afternoon, and while the weather down south was pouring buckets, we gladly took the overcast skies.  Our session started out at the Beetles graffiti wall across from the original Dick’s Drive-In location on NE 45th Street.  Over the last four years, we’ve eaten a few good burgers there.

I watched her stroll down the sidewalk in mock unison with the Beetles.  There were some TKD moves, and eventually, she resorted to dancing.  It was fun to just hang back and let her do her thing.

Around the corner, we found another brightly decorated fence.  Perfect backdrop for her shredded jeans and Converse!

Then, we were off to UW.  I’m so glad the cherry blossoms in the Quad were still in full bloom!

A photography session at UW would’t be the same without capturing a little glimpse of that gorgeous architecture.

It was tempting to get distracted by all of the lovely things blooming around campus, but it was time for another outfit change.

A huge part of Rachel’s college life has revolved around ROTC.  So, in addition to an upcoming graduation, she will be commissioned as a 2nd Lt. in the Air Force.  Her dad is a retired Air Force pilot, so now they have this flight suit in common.  She’s scheduled to attend Initial Flight Training later this year.

She also wanted to showcase her Detachment 910 T-shirt.

Another outfit change later, and we walked down to the Drumheller Fountain.

Accessories are an easy way to bring an outfit together and add some fun detail.  This pendant necklace was the perfect addition to Rachel’s look.

This last shot in front of the iconic Suzzalo Library, sums up for me what has been twenty-two years in the making.  Now she stands ready to put one chapter of her life behind her and looks forward to where life’s journey will take her next.  Know that you go out into this big world with the heartfelt love and support of your family.

Recently, I had the opportunity to collaborate with Jessica Garcia Studio and shoot her new collection of luxury active wear.  Jessica graduated from The Art Institute of California, San Diego with a Bachelors Degree in Fine Arts for Fashion Design.  She recently moved back to Washington state and is working full-time as a Production Assistant for a local brand right here in the Pacific Northwest!  Jessica showed her collection last month in Seattle at the Holiday RAW Artists showcase event and is looking forward to traveling to New York to present this collection at the February RAW Artist showcase in Queens.  She submitted our shoot to Model Citizen Magazine, and you can read more about her and her design style in an online interview under the blog tab at www.modelcitizenmag.com

But first, here’s a look at her Luxury Active collection.

This beautiful young lady is Alyssa, and she is an upcoming senior at Bellarmine Prep.  I had the privilege of meeting Alyssa and her mom, Dee, on a gorgeous evening.  Drama is a big part of Alyssa’s extra-curricular activities, so she made arrangements for us to start at the Tacoma Little Theater.  We had some ground to cover before the sun set, so we quickly made our way to Pt. Defiance Park.  It is such a versatile location, and our first stop was the lake.  The light was amazing!

There were plenty of flowers still blooming in the rose garden, and when I asked Alyssa which color was her favorite…she was all smiles for pink!

Alyssa knew she wanted to get some shots down at Owen’s Beach as well.  This striped dress and strappy sandals popped perfectly against the rocks and driftwood.

Then we made our way across town to catch the last of the light at Ft. Steilacoom Park.  Alyssa had another perfect dress.  The red and blue print is so pretty against the pale grass.

Aside from being an incredibly sweet girl, Alyssa had the confidence to just move however was comfortable for her.

And she wasn’t afraid to play.

She was an all-around natural in front of the camera, and she asked her mom to join her.  I told you she was a sweet girl!

Alyssa, I cannot thank you enough for trusting me with your senior portraits, but even more so, for being confident in yourself and letting your joy shine through.  All the best to you for a fantastic senior year.  Go Lions!

What an absolute pleasure to photograph this beautiful young lady, a soon to be college graduate, at the University of Washington!  We timed Selena’s session just right, and had a gorgeous, warm evening to work with.  Our first stop was the campus Quad.

Caps and gowns weren’t being issued for a couple of weeks, so we borrowed from my daughter’s closet.  Even though she isn’t wearing the traditional black college gown, we both loved how the blue made the colors of Selena’s tropical print dress pop.

As soon as I saw the shoes, I knew I had to get a close up to show them off.  So classy and fun!

No portrait session would be complete without incorporating the architecture of this famous landmark, the Suzzalo Library in Red Square.

After a wardrobe change, we walked over to the Sylvan Theater, a grassy area hidden amongst the trees and home of four white Ionic columns that once stood in front of the original university building.   Students are to touch the columns twice during their college career, once as incoming freshman and again at graduation.  We were a few weeks early, but it was fun to make sure Selena had the chance to do it.  I’m confident she is going to make her own good luck, though!

We scurried back to Clark Hall for a final outfit change.  This building has been home away from home for Selena as she is an Air Force ROTC cadet and looks forward to not only graduating soon but being commissioned as a second lieutenant.  After a brief stint back home in Nevada this summer, she will head off to training before reporting to her first duty station.

Congratulations Selena!  I wish you every success as you embark on this next chapter in your life and begin your career as an Air Force officer!  Thank you so much for letting me capture this milestone event for you.
