Today’s blog post is part two of my guide to Pacific Northwest locations for high school or college senior sessions.  In my last post, I covered my favorite PNW beaches where I enjoy photographing my senior girl and guy clients.  Today, we’re going to visit some of my favorite classic spots.

What makes a classic location anyway?  Here are some things to think about if you are considering a classic photography location.  Parks, manicured gardens, college campuses, churches, neighborhoods, architecture, flowers and greenery all have great classic elements.

Our first stop on the tour of classic locations is the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks in Ballard.  The grounds have mature blooming shrubs and trees along the paved walkways in the English garden.  Home to the busiest locks in the nation and a major tourist attraction, it’s a National Historic Site.  Below, Abbey poses on the steps of the historic administration building.

If you prefer the local Tacoma area, Point Defiance Park is home to formal and informal gardens, walking paths, and a pond.  Additionally, the pagoda offers a unique architectural style.  There are many options here and the park is a favorite with clients.

Back in Seattle, the University of Washington is a popular choice and offers 19th century architecture, green spaces, and if you time it right, cherry blossoms in the spring.

While the Seattle campus is undeniably beautiful, please don’t discount the UW Tacoma campus.  It’s a great location and has awesome brick buildings and walkways and little spots of greenery tucked in here and there.  I’d be thrilled if a senior girl would choose this location because I had a fantastic session with Alex here!

Our next stop takes us down south to Olympia.  I would love to shoot another senior session at the Washington State Capitol.  If you like simple lines of neoclassical architecture, then our beautiful US Capitol landmark is for you!

Back to Seattle.  I’m always glad when a client introduces me to a great new location.  Discovery Park is a gem in the Magnolia neighborhood and built on the historic grounds of Fort Lawton.  The park overlooks the Puget Sound and has meadows, walking trails, wildflowers, the beach and a lighthouse.  There is a lot of ground to cover here, so comfortable walking shoes are a must.  This location is so worth it though!

UW Tacoma isn’t the only photogenic college campus in town.  I’ve shot a couple of sessions at the University of Puget Sound and it’s perfect for clients who want to stick to a single location without sacrificing variety in their images.  Lakewold Gardens and the Wright Park Conservatory are also two spots that you should consider.  Do you have a favorite location in mind or a suggestion to share?  Let me know in the comments!

This dapper-dressed guy is a senior at Bellarmine Prep this year.  I had the pleasure of meeting Alex and his parents on a perfect evening at the Museum of Glass in downtown Tacoma.  We couldn’t have asked for better weather and we pretty much had the place to ourselves.  Before I get to all of Alex’s great images, though, let’s talk for a minute about this awesome outfit.  You can never go wrong with choosing one dressy look for your senior session.  Classic never goes out of style.  Alex went for a slightly dressed down version and this is how it’s done.

Alex and his parents had all of his outfits prepped and ready to go in a garment bag, so adding a jacket for a few shots was super easy.  Layers and accessories are a great way to add variety to your images.

Even the socks were on point!

Alex was really open to my suggestions for locations for his session, but when he saw the view of the bridge, he asked if we could incorporate it into some of his shots.  Absolutely!  I love it when seniors let me know what they like and the bridge does make for a really cool backdrop.

This maroon t-shirt is a great color on Alex, but it’s the Packwood, WA logo that has meaning.  Alex has spent a lot of good times with friends on the slopes near there.

Tacoma’s Union Station is another downtown landmark that makes for an impressive backdrop. We ventured across Pacific Avenue to the University of Washington Tacoma Campus.  There are so many fun architectural elements here that can add interest to your images.

Alex was so easy going and we captured so many good shots, but if I was forced to pick a favorite image, the one below just might be it.

Big thanks to Alex and his parents for a really great evening.  Alex, I hope the doors at Bellarmine open up soon so you can get back onto campus and enjoy everything your senior year has to offer.  Best wishes as you narrow down your college picks, and come springtime, have an awesome last high school lacrosses season!  Go Lions!

This is Mykahla and she will start her senior year at Bellarmine Prep in just a few short weeks.  Mykahla chose two great locations for her senior session and we started out at Point Defiance Park in Tacoma.  It was a beautiful evening drenched in golden light and Mykahla was ready to go with an amazing smile that just lights up her face!

When I saw this little gravel path meandering through these colorful blooms, I knew it was the perfect spot to photograph Mykahla.  She is absolutely radiant!Mykahla told me she has a little collection of Converse.  I’m so happy she included her love for Chuck Taylors in her senior session and I think she looks super cute in her prom dress and sneakers!

It was time for another outfit change and a change of location as well.  Mykahla wanted to include a more urban vibe in some of her images.  Downtown Tacoma has so many great locations to choose from.

The wind decided to pick up and play havoc with her hair, but thankfully Mykahla’s mom had a quick fix for these gorgeous curls.

A quick switch out for this really flattering jacket.  Professional with a touch of Mykahla’s personal style!

These summer evenings are fading faster these days, but I think we ended on a fantastic note.  This girl is full of big smiles and confidence, and the photo above captures that perfectly.  Best wishes, Mykahla!  I know that senior year is starting off a little differently this fall, but I hope you can get back on stage with at one last Bellarmine Theater production doing what you love and make amazing memories along the way!

Meet Marissa and Wyatt!  We recently got together at Fort Steilacoom Park and I had the best time photographing these siblings.

Marissa will be a sixth grader this coming school year.

Wyatt excitedly told me he’s going into the third grade.

I love all the images from this shoot, but these two right here above and below may just be my favorites from the night.

I love that mom, Jean, was willing to join in, though I’m just as guilty of being camera shy as she is.  Family portraits are so important because they capture who you are together at this very moment in time.

Is there anything sweeter than a girl in a field of tall grass holding a bouquet of wildflowers?

I told Jean that I could do an entire blog post on the many faces of Wyatt.  She said I captured a number of “his” looks, so that made me really happy!  I always hope that people’s personalities will shine through my lens.

What a way to end our session!  I love everything about this image and what a gift to be able to look back on this time.  Thank you Jean, Marissa and Wyatt for hanging out with me and allowing me to capture these special moments for you.
